Parental Controls - How To

  • How can I control what my child watches?

With Optimum Digital Cable, you can easily control the programming your family watches by using your remote control and the interactive onscreen program guide to set a personalized four-digit code. Optimum's Parental Control feature lets you place locks on selected ratings (such as NC-17 or TVMA), channels and titles. You also can hide adult titles from being displayed on screen. Once restricted, the program or channel can be viewed only by entering the Parental Locks PIN code you have selected.

  • How do I set my Parental Locks codes?

Press the Menu button on the remote, and select the Home icon to display the Main Menu (the Home icon is the first icon on the left with the picture of a house on it). From the Main Menu, select Setup. When the next screen appears, highlight and select PINs Setup. On this screen, you will have the option to create a Locks PIN to place locks on programs by rating, channels or titles, or to create a Purchase PIN, for preventing the unwanted purchase of pay ON DEMAND or Pay-per-View programs. You also may set the option to ensure that all programs will be locked following a power loss, until ratings and titles are restored.

After you create a Locks PIN, go back to the Main Menu, select Parental Locks and enter the Locks PIN you just created. Use the arrow buttons on your remote control to make selections for when the PIN will be needed to view a program. You may select programs to lock by title or rating, or lock an entire channel. You also can access the Locks Setup screen by pressing Menu on the remote and selecting the Lock icon.

  • Can I block an entire channel using Parental Locks codes?

Yes. You can completely lock out specific channels. Once you have set up your Parental Locks PIN, press the Menu button on your remote and select the Lock icon.

You will be prompted to enter the 4-digital Locks PIN you have created. When the TV Ratings Locks Screen appears, arrow down to Channel Locks, and use the right and left arrow keys to scroll through and display channels. When a channel you want to lock is displayed, press OK/Select on your remote to lock it. A picture of a lock will appear next to the channel name on this screen, and the PIN will be required every time someone wants to tune to that channel.

You also can set locks anytime while in the guide or while watching television. Press the Info button on your remote twice and select the Locks icon (the Locks icon is the last icon on the right with the picture of a lock on it). Or, if you have a silver remote, press the Lock button on your remote (the small button with a yellow A on it). Enter your four-digit Parental Locks PIN when prompted, and select options to lock the channel or title youre currently viewing.

  • How can I view programs that I have locked?

To view a program or channel that you have locked, tune to the program or channel and enter your four-digit Parental Locks PIN when prompted.

  • Can I turn Parental Locks on and off?

Yes. You can turn Parental Locks on or off. Press Menu on your remote and select the Locks icon. Enter your four-digit Parental Control code. When the Locks Setup Screen appears, arrow down to Master Locks and press the right arrow to display the Bypass Locks screen. You may then choose to temporarily bypass all Locks by changing the Bypass Locks option from NO to YES. You may also remove all previously set Locks by changing the Clear All Locks option from NO to YES.

  • Will the Parental Locks PIN Codes I set for my regular cable channels work for Pay-Per-View and ON DEMAND programs as well?

Yes. The parameters that you set for locking programs by rating will apply to both regular cable channels and ON DEMAND and Pay-Per-View programs. However, you cannot block ON DEMAND by locking ON DEMAND titles or locking Channel 1. You also may restrict the purchase of pay programs with a separate Purchase PIN. Once a purchase PIN is set, it will be required to view a pay ON DEMAND or Pay-Per-View program, regardless of the program's rating.
To set up a Purchase PIN, press the Menu button on the remote, and select the Home icon to display the Main Menu (the Home icon is the first icon on the left with the picture of a house on it). From the Main Menu, select Setup. When the next screen appears, highlight and select PINs Setup. On this screen, you can create a four-digit Purchase PIN, for preventing the unwanted purchase of pay ON DEMAND or Pay-Per-View programs.

  • Can I set up codes to block the unwanted purchase of Pay-Per-View and pay ON DEMAND programs?

Yes. You may restrict the purchase of pay programs with a separate Purchase PIN. Once a purchase PIN is set, it will be required to view a pay ON DEMAND or Pay-Per-View program, regardless of the rating.

  • What if I forget my Parental Control codes?

There's no need to worry if you forget your Parental Control code. You can call 1.877.273.7626, and a Optimum representative can clear the existing code so that you can enter a new one.

  • Does Optimum know what my Parental Control codes are?

Optimum customer care representatives do not have access to the Parental Control codes you set. If you forget the Parental Control code you set up, a Optimum representative can clear the code so that you may create a new one, but will not be able to see it or retrieve it for you.

  • Suppose I have analog service. Is there a tool for that?

Most analog boxes allow you to block channels. Using your set-top box's remote control or keypad, create a PIN code. Repeat that control procedure for every TV set/set-top box combination in your home. Children are not able to view the blocked channel(s) or change the control settings without entering the PIN code.

  • What if I don't have a set-top box?

Easy! Call your local Optimum office at 1.877.273.7626 to learn about your options.

  • How do I use a V-Chip?

Another helpful parental resource is the V-chip, which is available in newly manufactured TV sets with screens 13" or larger. It works in conjunction with the TV ratings system, blocking programs that have received a specified rating level. The settings are password protected and can be changed at any time. Follow the directions in your TV manual or visit www.tvguidelines.org for more information on the V-chip and TV programming ratings.

  • Whom do I contact about objectionable programming?

Because Optimum does not have any direct control of the specific programs carried by the various programmers, we suggest that you contact the network or the programming service directly. You also can contact Optimum at 1.877.273.7626 to share any concerns about programming you may find objectionable.
